HARRISBURG – Senator Jeffrey E. Piccola (R-15) of Dauphin/York Counties has been awarded the first-ever “Cyber Families Leadership Award” by the Pennsylvania Families for Public Cyber Schools for efforts during his tenure in the Legislature on behalf of public cyber schools in the Commonwealth.
A long-time charter school advocate, Piccola has led the charge on many initiatives including drafting legislation that established cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania. Since the creation of the 2002 public cyber school law, approximately 20,000 families have enrolled their children in the 21st century schools, according to the Pennsylvania Families for Public Cyber Schools.
Piccola was also the prime advocate for the inclusion of the State Charter Schools Appeal Board process. By its mere presence, the Appeal Board helps to put pressure on school boards to be fair in their dealings with charter schools. In addition to his support for charter and cyber charter schools, Piccola has remained a stalwart supporter of other educational initiatives which empower parents to make the best education choice for their child.
“I am pleased and honored today to be a recipient of this award and that in Pennsylvania we can offer students and families real options. My goal is to not only improve the public school system in Pennsylvania, but also to provide alternative educational options to families who live in underperforming school districts and for students with special needs,” said Piccola. “I look forward to charter and cyber schools continuing to be an important part of learning in this Commonwealth and another quality choice for parents to consider in the educational marketplace.”
